Overview of Electrodialysis

Electrochemical separation process driven by DC potential across ion-exchange membranes.

ED utilizes an electric field to transport ions through selective Anion and Cation Exchange Membranes (AEM/CEM). This results in the separation of the feed stream into a desalinated product stream (Diluate) and a concentrated brine stream (Concentrate).

1

Feed Introduction

Saline feed water enters the stack, flowing between alternating Cation and Anion exchange membranes.

2

DC Potential Application

A Direct Current field drives Cations (+) towards the Cathode and Anions (-) towards the Anode.

3

Selective Separation

CEMs allow only cations to pass; AEMs allow only anions. This selective blocking creates alternating Dilute and Concentrate channels.

4

Stream Isolation

The desalinated 'Diluate' is collected as product, while the enriched 'Concentrate' is discharged or processed for recovery.

Key: Alternating ion-selective membranes (AEM/CEM) capture ions in concentrate channels driven by the electric field.

Why Choose Electro Dialysis?

Superior recovery and efficiency for specific high-salinity applications.

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

  • High pressure operation
  • Susceptible to scaling/fouling
  • Limited recovery on high TDS
  • Membrane replacement frequency

Electro Dialysis (ED)

  • Low pressure operation
  • Higher tolerance to scaling
  • High recovery rates (Recirculation)
  • Long membrane life

Applications

Electro Dialysis is a versatile technology deployed where conventional separation methods fall short, especially in high-recovery and zero liquid discharge scenarios.

Desalination of Brackish Water
RO Reject Recovery (Zero Liquid Discharge)
Table Salt Production (Concentration)
Chemical Product Purification
Wastewater Reclamation
Heavy Metal Recovery
